Our Dreams Need an On-Going Supply of Ideas

“Innovation is taking two things that already exist and putting them together in a new way.”

  Tom Freston

Dreams Need Ideas

A dream may start as an idea but it won’t come to pass with just one idea. Yes, we come across or think of an idea that develops into a dream but then the dream needs many ideas, perhaps even hundreds or thousands if it will be realized. None of them may be original but putting them together in a new way may be what the world desperately needs.

Example of Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison, the inventor,  had an idea about developing an electric light bulb but before it came to pass he tried upwards of a thousand ideas before he found one that would work. He had to continually come up with new ideas to try, new ways to feed the dream. If he ran out of ideas, the dream would die.

In like manner, the dream we have, no matter how well expressed, needs to be fed and developed with an on-going supply of ideas or different approaches or ways of looking at things. Where do we get these ideas? Here are a few “ideas” about how to come up with ideas and some websites to explore.

Coming Up With New Ideas

  • Read, read, read
  • Write without editing
  • Meet and talk with new people
  • Travel to new places
  • Try something new
  • Get enough sleep and exercise
  • If you wake up with an idea, get up and write it down.  Have paper and pen ready before going to sleep.

Actively Pursue New Ideas

We don’t need to wait for ideas to just come to us. Some will and that’s good. But there are things we can proactively do, action steps we can take so that many more ideas are generated that will help us move toward our dream. Simply taking one of the steps above is a start.
