Battling Toward Our Dreams

Does is seem like we’re in a battle as we move toward our dreams? Doubt comes out of nowhere. Negative feelings surround us. Others may say that the dream is not worth following or who are we to think we can accomplish our dreams? All of this and more is what I call fake news regarding our dreams.

Ways to Battle the Fake News

All of it seems so real and often overwhelming. How do we deal with it? How do we continually muster the courage to go after our dreams; to persevere in the face of opposition, much of it in our heads and hearts? How do we deal with discouragement and despair and self-doubt and fake news we talked about last time? Here are a few, not necessarily in order of importance.

Write – Whether by hand or on the computer, write down what is taking place. Describe it in as much detail as possible. Expose it for what it is. Bring it to the light. Writing has a way of clarifying our thinking. A helpful book here is “The Miracle of Morning Pages” by Julia Cameron.

Walk – Get some exercise. Get moving. The endorphins will begin to flow and your mood will begin to lift.

Pray – I’m convinced we need God in our lives all the time but especially so when we’re down. Ask for His help. He wants to help but respects our wills. He’s waiting to be asked.

Breathe – As you sit or as you walk, stand up tall and breathe deeply. Bring more life-giving oxygen into your lungs. If you have access to essential oils, use cypress oil. It’s has great value here. See the book listed toward the end of this post.

Talk – Call, write, text, or email a trusted friend and talk. Oftentimes talking about something helps to clarify what is happening. Also, we need one another. We need another’s perspective.

Fact Check – Check out the facts which may seem very real but in reality might be fake news. Counter the fake news with truth.

Read – Spend some time reading the stories of great inventors, artists, discoverers, explorers, composers, etc. They will inspire you.

Forest Bathing – I know this may seem strange but there’s been a lot of research on the value of walking in a woods or forest. South Korea and Japan are far ahead of us in this area. Check out the book, “The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative” by Florence Williams

This is enough for now. We could come up with many other ways but the above are key. We may well come back to these in the future as moving toward our dreams is an ongoing challenge but one that can be met head on and won.
